Elementary and Middle School

Curriculum

The core curriculum in elementary and middle school at First Lutheran provides a strong foundation in key subjects like math, language arts, literature, science, and social studies. It ensures students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, preparing them for higher education and future success.

In addition to the core curriculum, we offer hands-on learning opportunities in subjects like fine arts, music, and technology. These programs foster creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork, enriching students' education and providing them with a well-rounded, diverse skill set.

Furthermore, our students are exposed to a foreign language as young as kindergarten. Our Spanish curriculum enhances communication skills, cultural awareness, and global understanding, all while preparing students for a diverse, interconnected world.

Hands-on and interactive learning

STEM

STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is increasingly recognized as essential in fostering a well-rounded, future-ready education, even for younger students in grade school. Early exposure to STEM subjects offers significant benefits that go beyond just learning specific content.  At First Lutheran School, we recognize the importance of STEM.  That’s why our students have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on STEM class as early as Kindergarten.  The skills and mindsets fostered through STEM learning—critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, adaptability, and resilience—are invaluable in the modern world.  By integrating STEM into early education, we can equip students with the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly complex and interconnected society.

Elective Classes

One of the great features of First Lutheran School are the electives available for students beginning in 5th grade and carrying all the way through 8th grade. Students are allowed to choose one elective every other month. These classes allow students to explore their interests, develop new skills, and engage in creative learning. Furthermore, they help foster independence, encourage teamwork, and provide a platform for our students to discover their passions.

Examples of elective courses in our curriculum include but are not limited to:

Culinary Arts, Introduction to Sewing, Indoor Sports, Outdoor Sports, Intro to Agriculture, Anatomy I, and Anatomy II.

Robotics

Beginning in 5th grade, students have the opportunity to further enhance their STEM understanding and join our Robotics Program.  This program further fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.  It encourages teamwork and introduces students to technology and engineering concepts in a fun, hands-on way.  This early exposure to Robotics builds confidence, sparks interest in future careers, and prepares students for a tech-driven world.

Interactive Learning Adventures

At least once a trimester, students are engaging in an Interactive Learning Adventure.  These adventures are hands-on, immersive field trips that bring classroom lessons to life by connecting students with real-world experiences.  In essence, Interactive Learning Adventures make learning fun, deepen understanding, and create lasting memories by connecting academic concepts to practical, immersive experiences outside the classroom.

Physical EduCATION and fine arts

Art

Our Kindergarten - 8th grade art curriculum is designed to teach basic concepts of art in a way that allows children to be creative and enjoy the process, not just the finished product.

Physical Education

Gym classes at First teach our students important life skills like teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. It also promotes physical fitness, healthy habits, and stress relief. Our students also learn motor skills, coordination, and the value of staying active, contributing to overall well-being and social development.

Band and Music

First offers private music instruction to students, some beginning as early as 1st grade. Piano, violin and band instruction takes place during the school day.

Student Involvement

First Lutheran offers programs that encourage student involvement. These initiatives help students develop responsibility, teamwork, and a deeper connection to their school and community, enhancing their overall educational experience and personal growth.

The Kids in Action program empowers our students to plan events, activities, or community service projects. It fosters leadership, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility, allowing students to actively contribute to their school and community while building valuable life skills.

Our Student Council helps teach grade school students leadership, responsibility, teamwork, and communication skills. It also fosters a sense of community, encourages student involvement, and gives children a voice in school decisions, promoting confidence and engagement.
